Fresh off the release of his introspective sixth record Wandering Rebel, Juan Wauters returns with Limbo, a collection of homespun bonus tracks. Written during an extended break from touring in the wake of the COVID-19 shutdown, Wandering Rebel was full of candid reflections on topics both personal and societal: songs like “Nube Negra” explore self-image and escapism, while “Modus Operandi” decries the fairweather New Yorkers who fled the city during the lockdown. With Limbo, Wauters invites listeners to examine these reflections a bit closer. The only brand new track on the EP, lead single “P.O.V.” is a spirited indictment of Los Angeles’ lack of access to public bathrooms and its effect on the city’s homeless population. “It's a real shame,” Wauters laments, with his signature bemused frankness, “it's one of the richest cities in the world.” Recorded during the Wandering Rebel sessions, “P.O.V.” is a dispatch from the L.A. stint that produced album track “Millionaire”, another reflection on the city’s inaccessibility. The other tracks on Limbo are thoughtful reinterpretations of key tracks from Wandering Rebel. A lively, full-band version of “Mensaje Codificado” offers an upbeat take on one of the album’s most pensive tracks. Elsewhere, English versions of “Milanesa al Pan” and “Nube Negra” and a Spanish version of “Modus Operandi” offer Wauters’ multilingual fanbase a new opportunity to consider his poignant lyricism.
